Ty, Kennedy and I went to Seattle earlier this month. It was the first time for all 3 of us. We had such a great time! It was cold for Kennedy and I but it didn't stop us from being out all day every day seeing the sights. We ate some great food,saw the sights and mostly just enjoyed each other. It was a trip that I will never forget and hope that Ty and Kennedy won't either.

I realize that it has been well over a year since I have last updated our blog. I have no excuses. For a while I blamed facebook and said that I was connecting with everyone there...but it isn't the same. Our blog friends are our real friends; and after going back though our blog (for the first time in a year) I realized that I was a lot more open and honest in what I posted and said on my blog because I wasn't so worried about what anyone thought. The only people that look at our blog are the people that already REALLY know us already and are not just reconnecting after 20 years.
After spending the past 1 1/2 hours going through our blog - all the way to the beginning in January 2008 - I realized that I started that blog as a way to keep family updated on our family and our adventures in Hawaii. But as I went back through and read my captions and entries I realized that I also started the blog for myself; It made me feel closer to family and friends back home. I am hoping that by starting to put new entries in again I will somehow feel that connection again......I need to feel it right now more than ever.
It was also pointed out to me by a great friend that this blog can serve as a journal for my family and after looking at it again after all this time I realized how right he was. I saw and read things that I had forgotten about. I laughed out loud and I cried - those are reasons enough for me to start up again!

On the second day of school Tommy's appendix ruptured and we took in him in for an emergency appendectomy. It was a very scary day. We were very lucky that we had such incredible doctors taking care of him and grateful that he had such a speedy recovery. Dr. Shim told us that he had one of the worst ruptures he had ever seen and recovered by far, the fastest. T is one tough kid. He was very anxious to get home and back to school.

When I was little we always had dogie lambs (orphan lambs) to feed in the spring/summertime. It has been at least 20 years since I have fed a lamb so getting to feed them at Uncle Martin's house was so much fun. My kids all LOVED it and couldn't understand why I used to think it was a chore. It was definately one of the highlights of the trip!

A friend of mine owns a darling store called cupcake here in Honolulu. She asked if Isabelle would be a model for a photo shoot for her store as well as an online magazine. Isabelle said she wanted to do it and had lots of fun getting all dresses up and having fun with the other kids. Isabelle got lots of cute new clothes, made some new friends and ate more frozen yogurt and cupcakes than she has eaten all year!

I realize it has been a very long time since I have posted anything to our blog. I hear about it almost daily now:) I am going to start posting again and I am going to start with pictures from a few months ago and TRY to catch up! I am not going to do a lot of writing with these pictures (it takes too long). Sorry.
In a few words this was our past 3-4 months. Ty came out in May and stayed with us for about 3 weeks before the other kids and I flew back to Utah with him mid-June. We spent a couple of weeks there before Roger flew in and joined us. Debbie, Dave, Gabi, Camila and Virginia also drove out from CA and stayed at my parents with us as well. We had a really nice time visiting with both sides of our families as well as catching up with friends. After another week in Utah Roger, Isabelle and I flew home. While Kennedy and Tommy were spending their summer time with their dad we had a fun weekend at the Ko'Olina Beach Club. It was a lot of fun, but not quite the same without the other kids.:( About a week later though we had a wonderful visit from Memo (Roger's cousin), Elizabeth and Zachary. Isabelle and Zach had a great time together and were even mistaken for twins!!! We shared fun times with them that we will never forget. - thanks again Memo, Liz & Zach - we miss you guys! The same day that the Escamilla/Lawton family left we got our Ken and T back! We tried to fit an entire summer's worth of fun into just a few days before school started. School started on July 30th with Kennedy being a freshman in High School, Tommy is in the 5th Grade and Isabelle soon to be starting Kindergarten at the same school as Tommy. On the 2nd day of school we ended up at Kapiolani Hospital with Tommy having to get his appendix taken out. It had already ruptured by the time we got there and they did an emergency appendectomy right away. He is doing well now and ready to return to school in the morning. My mom flew out this past week to help out with the kids and be here for us. We are really enjoying her company...we just wish it were under different circumstances.

These pictures are my favorites from the entire summer. The one of our family is the first real family picture we have ever had taken. We all love it!

On April 18th Isabelle turned 5. We celebrated all afternoon and evening with friends. Roger arranged for a limo to pick us all up and take us to dinner and to get Isabelle's ears pierced - yes, we finally did it! We had a great time and came back to our house after dinner for pinata and cake. We are so lucky that we have such incredible friends to celebrate with. Thanks to everyone for the phone calls, messages and packages that you sent. Isabelle was feeling the love all day.

My mom & dad and Ry's family came to stay during spring break in March. My parents rented a beach house which was not too far from our house but we still moved over and stayed there with them. It was a gorgeous house, right on the water complete with a pool, hot tub and an awesome view. We had a really good time with all of them and did so many fun things. I have tons more pictures to post from my parents and Ryan's family. I just have to still get them downloaded onto the laptop. Here are a few cute ones from our other camera in the meantime. 1. The kids and I tried to go on walks every day while they were on break. One day we were walking around Dimond Head and stopped for a drink at the top of Diamond Head Road. A man came over and told us to look over the edge of the lookout wall. There was this beautiful Hawai'ian Monk Seal sunbathing on the sand. We returned home to get our camera and hiked down the trail to the beach. We sat there for at least an hour watching him. It was a really neat experience for all of us.

I took Tommy and Isabelle to see the Mexican tall ship that was docked in Honolulu Harbor for a few days. The crew was part of the Mexican Navy and were all extremely friendly. They were very impressed to hear Isabelle speaking a little Spanish to them....in Hawai'i! It was a beautiful ship and Tommy was in heaven as we took a little tour.

Ashlee surprised Ahmad with a trip to Hawai'i for Valentines Day. It sure was hard keeping it a secret but she pulled it off! He was thrilled (who wouldn't be?) and they came for about 5 days. We had so much fun and packed as much as we could into our time with them.

Roger called me from work the day before and said he thought we should go on a date that night since Ash and Ahmad would be here the next day on Valentines Day. I was busy cleaning and getting ready for them so I said OK but I didn't want to go anywhere really nice. Roger picked me up at 5:30 and we headed a few blocks away on Diamond Head Road. He pulled over and stopped and one of the lookouts and got out. He gave me a lei as well as a beautiful bouquet of flowers and said we were going to have a picnic. We decided to celebrate Tommy's birthday a little later in the month this year since he was at his dad's house on his actual birthday and since Brittney, Derek and Dave would all be here at the same time. We had a fun dinner at our house for him and also for our friend Sue who has a B-day just a few days after his. Dave fell asleep on my sofa once and got sand all over it (immediately after he had warned Camila not to do that exact thing). I have never let him live it down. I guess he is afraid of me now so he lays on the bench by our front door????

Britt and Derek called to see if the kids wanted to hike Manoa Falls with them. Ken was with her friends and Tommy and Roger were sick so just I went along as a third wheel. It was a really pretty hike that I had not done before. Once we got to the falls we decided to hike even further up on another trail. It was a fun afternoon despite the mosquitos and muddy shoes!

The day after Christmas there was a big lightning storm that threw off the power for the entire island. We were out shopping when it happened. It was very strange driving home through the city with no lights anywhere. We ate a nice dinner of crackers, cheese and whatever other goodies people had brought to us for Christmas. Isabelle was sad because she had been looking forward to coming home and playing with her new toys all day. We lit some candles and she played by candlelight. It was fun....for one night!

On Christmas Day we took a drive around the island. It was a gorgeous day and not too much traffic. We stopped at a SUPER windy Pali Lookout, took Virginia to see the HPU Windward campus, Byodo-In Buddhist Temple and Kualoa Beach Park. Roger had gotten a lei for his dad for Christmas. When we stopped at Kualoa Beach Virginia and Isabelle threw it out into the ocean. Isabelle told us later that night that she knows he came and got it. It was so sweet. We ended the day at Big City Diner which is a favorite local place we love. We were surprised at how many families were there eating Christmas dinner!

Sue and Lynn invited us to spend Christmas Eve with them and their family. We were so glad to be invited and had SO much fun. I can't imagine how quiet it would have been being alone at our house that night. Roger and I are so grateful for Sue, Lynn, Ted, Bev and all the rest of their family for all that they have done to go out of their way to make us always feel included. We truly feel like we have family here and having that feeling during the holidays means more to us than anything.

We were getting ready for bed the night before Christmas Eve and all of the sudden there was a knock on our door. We answered the door and were so surprised to see Santa standing there! It was a bummer though because Papa had left right before that to go back to work for a little while. wink wink Isabelle had NO idea that it was him and was a little afraid at first. She eventually got closer and even sat on his lap for a while. It was so sweet to see how much she really believes in Santa. Santa (Roger) was the best. Roger's mom Virginia came to stay with us for the holidays. We are so happy to have her finally be able to visit us in Hawai'i. The only downside is that Kennedy and Tommy had to leave for Utah the very next day after she arrived....bummer! She is staying for about 3 weeks and will see them again because they return home the day before she leaves. Isabelle is very happy to have her here and Roger and I are too. It will make the holidays more fun for all of us and help Isabelle not be so lonely without her two best buddies.

Isabelle's halau performed several times during the holidays. By the time Christmas came we all knew every song by heart and could probably have danced along with the dancers. We love watching her and are so proud of the great little dancer she is becoming. The weekend after Thanksgiving her halau performed at the Hawaii Kai Town Center. Santa came (by boat) at the end and Isabelle got some quality time with him. This meeting sparked something in her. This is the first year that she has really been excited and facinated with Santa and everything about him. We all love the magic that it brings to the holidays for all of us and hope that it stays for quite a few years.

Ty came to spend a week with us at Thanksgiving. Yeah! We were so happy to see him again and he was happy to get out of the cold for a few days. We tried to fit a lot into just a few days and had lots of fun doing it.

Since moving to Hawai'i I have not done much of my little tomato art except for a few pieces that were special requests here and there. I just don't have the space and I guess I got a little burned out doing so much of it in LA. I have now started making these super cute little Hawai'ian keiki dolls and selling them at the local shops. I have actually been doing it now since the middle of summer and am still enjoying it very much. I started a blog a few months ago but forgot to post something about it. I also wanted to give a shout-out to my wonderful sweatshop employees (both are unpaid) in Utah. They have helped me out a TON lately helping me fill my holiday orders.

enjoy the little things

With all of our traveling around we have not been to the beach in a while. Isabelle and I decided to walk over this morning and spend an hour or so. Isabelle built this great sand castle. It started out to be two houses (one for her and one for me). At the last minute she wanted them to be together so she made the little center piece to connect them. I thought she did a great job finding things to be her doors, windows, plants and even dogs! She was very proud and I was SO glad I had thought to bring my small camera.Casita del Mar

While we were at the beach Sue called to see if we would go look at a sofa with her. We ran home, swimsuits and all and picked her up to go. After we checked it out we decided to stop by the new Yogurtland in Manoa. It was Sue's first time so Isabelle was happy to show her how it worked. Thanks again for the treat Sue!
